Multi-Engine Rating · Piper Seneca

Multi-engine rating in Philadelphia

Add twin-engine privileges to your pilot certificate in our Piper Seneca. Our package is designed to get you checkride-ready in as few as 3 days, weather and scheduling permitting.

  • Led by an MEI who also holds an ATP
  • Piper Seneca (PA-34-200) twin
  • No knowledge test for the add-on

What the rating lets you do

Fly twin-engine airplanes

A multi-engine rating adds the airplane multiengine land class to your pilot certificate. You can then act as pilot in command of a twin, within the privileges of the certificate you hold.

  • Act as pilot in command of multi-engine airplanes
  • Fly airplanes with two engines and more complex systems
  • Start building multi-engine flight time
  • Take a big step on the path to professional and airline flying

Added to a private certificate, it lets you fly a twin for personal travel. Added to a commercial certificate, it opens professional multi-engine flying.

Who it's for

Pilots ready for a second engine

You need an existing pilot certificate with an airplane rating. From there, the rating fits several goals.

Private pilots

Personal flying

Add a twin to your private certificate for travel and a new challenge. The systems and procedures you learn make you a sharper pilot.

Commercial pilots

Professional flying

Add multi-engine privileges to your commercial certificate. It is the final step in our training path.

Career path

Building toward the airlines

Airliners have more than one engine. Earning the rating lets you start logging twin time on your way there.

Not a pilot yet? Start with private pilot training, then come back for your twin rating.

Syllabus

What you'll learn

Multi-engine training centers on one skill above all: keeping control when an engine fails. Everything else builds around it.

Ground: 3 hours

Systems and aerodynamics

  • Seneca systems: engines, propellers, fuel, electrical and landing gear
  • Engine-out aerodynamics, VMC and the critical engine concept
  • Multi-engine V-speeds, including VYSE (blue line)
  • Weight and balance and performance planning
  • Engine failure procedures, talked through before you fly them
Flight: 10 hours dual

Flying the Seneca

  • Normal takeoffs, climbs and landings in a twin
  • Engine failure: identify, verify and feather
  • VMC demonstration
  • Single-engine maneuvering, approaches and landings
  • Steep turns, slow flight and stalls
  • Emergency procedures and emergency descent

How training works at GQ

Led by an MEI who holds an ATP

Multi-engine training at GQ is led by a multi-engine instructor (MEI) who also holds an airline transport pilot (ATP) certificate.

You train one-on-one under FAA Part 61, with a written training plan, a briefing before every flight and a debrief after. There is no knowledge test for the add-on, so your ground instruction goes straight into systems and procedures. A practice checkride comes before you meet the examiner.

GQ was founded in September 2015 by Faisal Husein, who flew commercial airliners for Mesa Airlines and JetBlue.

About GQ Aviation

Twin engine

The Piper Seneca

Our multi-engine trainer is a Piper Seneca (PA-34-200), a twin with retractable landing gear. You fly it for all 10 hours of dual in your package.

The Seneca is also the airplane for your checkride, so you test in the airplane you trained in.

Multi-engine FAQ

Questions about the twin rating

Have a question we didn't cover? Call (215) 839-8507 or read our main FAQ.

What are the multi-engine rating requirements under Part 61?

To add a multi-engine class rating to an existing private or commercial certificate, you need training from an authorized instructor. You also need their logbook endorsement. Then you pass a practical test at the level of the certificate you hold, private or commercial. There is no minimum number of hours and no knowledge test (14 CFR 61.63).

How much does a multi-engine rating cost at GQ?

Our package is $4,999. It includes 10 hours of dual in the Piper Seneca, 3 hours of ground and the airplane for your checkride. Before you start, we confirm in writing what is included and any separate costs, such as the examiner fee.

Is there an accelerated multi-engine course?

Yes. Our package is designed to get you checkride-ready in as few as 3 days, weather and scheduling permitting. Come prepared, and keep your schedule open.

Do I need an instrument rating first?

No. You can add a multi-engine rating to a private or commercial certificate with or without an instrument rating. Our path places it after commercial, but ask us what fits your goals.

Is there a written test?

No. When you add multi-engine privileges to a certificate you already hold, there is no knowledge test (14 CFR 61.63). You do take a practical test, which includes an oral exam and a flight test.

Who teaches the course?

Multi-engine training is led by an MEI who also holds an ATP certificate. You train one-on-one.

What if the weather doesn't cooperate?

We fly only when it is safe. If weather or maintenance cancels a flight, we find a new date at no charge. That is why the 3-day goal depends on weather and scheduling.
