How gifting works

From checkout to takeoff

You buy the gift. They choose when to fly. Here is what happens in between.

  1. Order online

It takes a couple of minutes. Mention it's a gift, and we confirm within one business day.

  2. Get the certificate

We email you a printable gift certificate. Print it for a card or gift box, or send it along.

  3. They schedule

The recipient calls or emails us to pick a date. Flights are by appointment.

  4. They fly

They arrive 10 minutes early at Northeast Philadelphia Airport. If weather cancels, we reschedule free.

Buying a flight for yourself instead? Skip the certificate. We contact you within one business day to schedule.

Gift ideas

Who it's perfect for

A flight is a gift they do, not a gift they store. Here's how to match it to the person.

Birthdays & holidays

A gift they open now and look forward to later. The printable certificate fits in a card or under the tree.

Father's Day

For the dad who looks up at every plane. Give him a discovery flight at the controls with a CFI beside him, or a window seat on the flight tour.

Graduations

Mark the milestone with a first flying lesson. If aviation is on their mind, the time can be logged toward a pilot certificate.

Retirements

Now there's time for the things they always meant to try. Pick a hands-on lesson or a relaxed sightseeing flight.

The person who has everything

Skip another thing for the shelf. Give them a story instead: the day they flew an airplane with an instructor beside them.

A future pilot

Know someone who can't stop talking about flying? Start with a real lesson, then add a gift card toward more.

Gift terms

Gift terms in plain language

No surprises for you or the person you're treating. These are the rules that apply to every gift flight.

One tip before you buy: the 250 lb limit applies to each person. It keeps the airplane within safe weight and balance. If that could be an issue, call us first.

For the future pilot

Gift a head start on a pilot certificate

A flight gift card in any amount can go toward flying lessons. Pair it with a discovery flight and their first lesson is already in the logbook.

We train under FAA Part 61, so lessons fit around their schedule. Programs run from Private Pilot through Instrument, Commercial and Multi-Engine. Instructor credentials on our staff include ATP, CFI, CFII, MEI and AGI, and our checkride sign-offs are led by an FAA Gold Seal flight instructor.

Philadelphia City Council's Resolution 230535 cited 50+ students GQ Aviation trained toward their certificates.

Gifting lessons to a teen?

  • There's no minimum age to take lessons and log instruction with an instructor.
  • A student pilot certificate for airplanes requires a minimum age of 16.
  • The private pilot certificate requires a minimum age of 17.
  • A medical certificate (third class or higher) is needed before solo.

Minimum ages per 14 CFR 61.83 (student pilot) and 61.103 (private pilot). Medical: 14 CFR 61.23.

More answers in our full FAQ

Can they choose the date?

Yes. The recipient calls or emails us and picks a date with us. Flights are by appointment, and we're open daily from 6 am to 8 pm.

How is the gift delivered?

By email. Mention it's a gift when you order and we email you a printable gift certificate. Print the certificate for a card, or send it on.

Can I give it to someone out of town?

Yes. The certificate arrives by email, so you can send it anywhere. They fly from Northeast Philadelphia Airport (KPNE), 9800 Ashton Rd, Hangar A, Philadelphia, PA 19114. It stays valid for at least five years, so they can plan it around a visit.

What if they are nervous?

Pick the gift that fits their comfort level. On a discovery flight, a certificated flight instructor (CFI) starts with a ground briefing and walk-around. Then the CFI sits beside them at the dual controls.

If they would rather not fly the airplane, the Philadelphia Flight Tour has a GQ pilot at the controls. They're welcome to call us with questions first.

Can two people share?

Intro and discovery flights put one person at the controls. The Philadelphia Flight Tour ($299) includes a friend, so it's the best pick for two. The 250 lb limit applies to each person.

Is there a minimum age?

No. There's no minimum age for an intro or discovery flight, so it makes a great gift for young aviators.

Does it expire?

Gift certificates and gift cards are valid for at least five years from purchase. That gives them plenty of time to find the right day.

What if the weather is bad?

We reschedule. If weather or maintenance cancels the flight, we find a new date at no charge. To change the date for any other reason, we ask for 24 hours' notice.

Can I add a personal message?

The certificate is printable, so you can tuck it into a card with your own note. Want something added to the certificate itself? Ask us when you check out.

Need help choosing?

Tell us who it's for and we'll help you pick the right gift.
